Potassium and iodine combine chemically to form potassium iodide. It has the chemical formula KI and is a white, crystalline salt. Potassium iodide is created when potassium hydrogen carbonate and hydroiodic acid combine.
A wide range of uses exist for potassium iodide, such as feed additives, polarising film for computer and smartphone LCDs, photographic emulsions, feed raw materials for various iodine compounds, and reaction catalysts for chemicals.
In the pharmaceutical industry, it is used in the production of iodine replacement medications, expectorants, antifungal medications, and treatments for syphilis, chronic rheumatism, neuralgia, and arthritis. Furthermore, potassium iodide has many applications, such as an analytical reagent in hypochlorite oxidation-reduction titrations and as an external indicator in the form of potassium iodide starch paper used in oxidant measurements.
